Dear Friends and Family,
Thank you deeply for the overwhelming support and condolences following the loss of our beloved Rodger. We understand that many are seeking details about the circumstances surrounding his passing.
On April 30th, 2024 the Los Angeles District Attorney has publicly released the name of the driver and filed charges and an arrest warrant for Julie Haq for gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated. The following day she turned herself into the Long Beach Courthouse where she was identified as a resident of Long Beach.
On Feb. 20, 2024, at approximately 11:48 p.m., officers responded to the intersection of Anaheim Street and Atlantic regarding an injury traffic collision between two vehicles.
Upon arrival, officers found Rodger trapped inside his Ford Focus. Long Beach Fire Department personnel responded and determined he passed at the scene.
The preliminary investigation indicates that Julie, driving a 2012 Lexus, was traveling northbound on Atlantic Avenue approaching Anaheim Street at a higher speed than the rate of traffic while Rodger was traveling eastbound on Anaheim Street approaching Atlantic Avenue. The Lexus broadsided Rodger in the middle of the intersection causing Rodger to lose control. Rodger struck a traffic signal light and an abandoned building on the northeast corner of the intersection. The Lexus lost control and struck a bus bench on the northeast corner of the intersection. Julie was interviewed and then taken to the nearby hospital to be treated for her minor injuries. As part of the investigation blood was drawn and secured by a warrant.
We appreciate your patience and understanding as we navigate this very challenging period.
Rodger held a special place in the hearts of many, and we acknowledge the closeness he shared with each of you. However, during our time of mourning, we kindly request that you refrain from inquiries about additional specifics or opinions of his death. The family has chosen to grieve privately for the time being as we plan his services and seek justice, and we hope you can respect our need for space and reflection during this emotional time.
For those interested in additional information, the Long Beach Post created an article with Rodger’s obituary. That page will serve as a window into the last few days we had with Rodger prior to the incident. We invite you to join us in celebrating the positive impact he had on all of us.
Your support and understanding mean the world to us, and we are grateful for the love and memories you share.
